ASCRIBED TO JACQUES CALLOT (1592-1635) Figures approaching a fortified settlement on horseback, with a dog and figures smoking pipes, seated on a rock in the foreground, pen and ink, 4.75" x 7.25", and a similar drawing of a fortified building with a bridge spanning a river with a town beyond, 4.5" x 7.25" (2). Provenance: The Hoare Family and thence by descent Private collection, Hampshire.

Description: Jacques Callot (French, 1592-1635) La Carrière de Nancy, ou La Revue Neuve de Nancy, an 18th Century Impression Signed in the plate "Iac. Callot In. et fecit" beneath the image l.l., identified in a pencil inscription on the reverse. Etching on paper, plate size 6 9/16 x 20 in. (16.7 x 50.7 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Center vertical crease, foxing, toning, creasing, nicks and wear to the left edge, remnants of prior mountings to the upper edge of the reverse. Literature: Édouard Meaume and Jacques Callot, Recherches Sur La Vie Et Les Ouvrages De J. Callot (Paris and Nancy: 1860), no. 621.
