Description:
JACQUES CALLOT Les Trois Pantalons. Set of 3 etchings, circa 1620. Each 242x154 mm; 9 1/2x6 1/8 inches, thread margins. Lieure 288 in the first state (of 2), before Silvestre's address. Two sheets with Cardinal's coat-of-arms (?) watermark (Lieure 23), the third sheet with interlaced initials P and W counter mark to an unknown watermark. Brilliant, richly-inked impressions of these extremely wscarce etchings, with strong contrasts, partially inky plate edges and no sign of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of these subjects. According to Lieure, the earliest impressions of these etchings were pulled by Callot in Florence, before his return to Nancy with the plates in 1621. The three figures represent three principal characters of the 17th Century Comédie-Italienne theatrical tradition: Le Cassandre; Le Capitan; and Le Zani Cornetto. Callot has placed them on stage-like platforms with spectators and Florentine arhitecture in the backgrounds. Lieure 288-290. Estimate $3,000 - 5,000
