Lot 62: Harry Callahan, ‘Eleanor, Chicago, 1949’’’’, Silver Gelatin Print Description: Silver gelatin print Chicago, USA, 1949, printed later Harry Callahan (1912-1999) – American photographer Signed by the artist in pencil in lower right margin beneath image Annotated in pencil on verso ‘5-59 EMV’’’’ Image dimensions: 9 7/8 x 9 1/8 in. (25.1 x 23.2 cm) Sheet dimensions: 11 7/8 x 11 in. (30.2 x 27.9 cm) Framed dimensions: 20 5/8 x 16 5/8 x ¾ in. (52.4 x 42.2 x 1.9 cm) Very good condition Self-taught photographer Harry Callahan produced less than a dozen final images a year. Of these, his wife Eleanor was his strongest subject. Callahan photographed her over a period of fifteen years, most frequently between 1948 and 1953. In this image, Callahan shows Eleanor in the water, her dark hair flowing out around her shoulders making an ethereal composition. The passion Callahan had for his muse lays the foundation for this fine example of a profound approach to workign a known subject – a practice he encouraged his students to do as well. Harry Callahan (1912-1999) Harry Callahan was an American photographer who was born in Detroit, Michigan, and remains one of the only photographers to have both his work in color and in black and white gain critical acclaim. He left no written records of his career apart from his photographs, despite spending nearly every afternoon developing images he had taken that day. Callahan enjoyed experimenting with multiple exposures, and captured deeply personal and introspective images of his own life and emotions, which he in turn encouraged his students to do. In 1996 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, and his work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and elsewhere.
