Nearby a mermaid feeds Canada geese and a child mermaid plays with a ship model. A sailor at left wearing a straw boater marked “U.S.N.” reads the “Shipping News” and the “Wall Street Journal”. Signed lower right “R. Cahoon” . Provenance: Private Collection, Alabama. Description RALPH EUGENE CAHOON, JR. Cahoon, pinxt' lower right. oil on masonite Provenance Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts (retains original label); Christie's, New York, October 3, 2007, sale 1882, lot 67. Catalogue Note Ralph Cahoon was born in Chatham, Massachusetts in 1910. He learned the art of furniture decoration from his wife Martha Farham Cahoon (1995-1999), an artist in her own right who came from a family of Swedish furniture decorators, restorers, and painters. Many of his designs were based on Scandinavian, Pennsylvania German, and American folk paintings. The iconic mermaids that are a hallmark of his work are derived from Pennsylvania German dower chests.

Sailors on the back of a whale hoist up nets full of mermaids as the two-masted ship Atlantis sails by. "Alvin" written on a heart on the whale's tale. Hot air balloons fill the sky and a shore scene with lighthouse and village are in the background. Signed lower right "R. Cahoon 1977". Note: Commissioned by the daughter of naval architect Francis Minot, who was instrumental in the design of the "Atlantis". Oil on masonite, 25" x 33". Framed.
