RALPH EUGENE CAHOON, JR. American, 1910-1982 Transportation". Signed lower right "R. Cahoon". Depicts a Cape Cod Railroad train moving from left to right along with a sailor and a mermaid colliding on two old high wheel bicycles. A "Boston" horse and carriage with mermaids and sailors fill the righthand foreground. The background is filled with a multi color hot air balloon and three ships. This is one of four known examples of the transportation/race theme. One was sold at Eldred's in August of 1999, the other is in the collection of Heritage Plantation. One of the most important Cahoon works Eldred's has had the pleasure of handling. This is the first time this painting has been on the market in over fifty years. Accompanied by a copy of the 1964 Parke Bernet Galleries auction catalog that includes this work. Provenance: Vose Galleries Exhibition of Ralph Cahoon, 1960. Maxim Karolik from Vose. Parke Bernet Galleries, the Property of the Estate of the Late Maxim Karolik, Newport RI, Sale No. 2290, June 17, 1964, Lot #254 Private Collection, Massachusetts. Oil on masonite, 25½" x 43½". Framed."
