His first solo exhibition was held in 1947 and was initially not very successful, but after he was awarded the 'Prix de la Critique' in June 1948 Buffet gained much attention and his works were in great demand quickly. After that he showed his new works, which mostly were created in thematic series, in the Galerie David et Garnier. Buffet developed a distinctive, neo-realist style with dramatically emphasized black lines.
