Description:
Lot 51: Karl Buchholz (1849-1889), Edge of an Autumn Forest, 1881 Description: Oil on canvas, relined Germany, 1881 Karl Buchholz (1849-1889) - German landscape painter Signed and dated 'K. Buchholz / Wm / 81.' lower left Dimensions: 31 x 42 cm Provenance: Private collection, Bavaria A small composition with a view of an autumn birch forest; the auction record for a comparable landscape by the artist is currently set at €11,000 The present work from 1881 was created by the German landscape painter Karl Buchholz and depicts a typical subject for the artist. It shows a landscape with a view onto the edge of a forest, the foliage already tinted by autumn. The countryside surrounding Weimar, where Buchholz had his own studio, is a central motif within the artist's oeuvre. Influenced by the naturalistic aspirations of the Weimar school and the plein air painting of the Barbizon painters, he painted atmospheric landscapes with loose brushwork. The German Impressionist Lovis Corinth called Buchholz the 'genius of the Weimar art school'. The painting is signed and dated 'K. Buchholz / Wm / 81.' lower left. There is a label 'Karl Buchholz' on the back of the canvas. The canvas is relined. The surface is partially stained, with rubbing to the left center. There are retouchings in the right area and minimal abrasions due to rubbing of the frame. The frame show some chips. The framed work measures 40 x 51 cm, the stretcher frame measures 31 x 42 cm. Karl Buchholz (1849-1889) In 1867 Karl Buchholz attended the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Arts in Weimar where he was a pupil of the landscape painter Max Schmidt and later a master student of Theodor Hagen. In Weimar he became acquainted with plein air painting, inspired by the French Barbizon School. Buchholz painted predominately landscapes of the Weimar environment, capturing the atmospheric changes of the seasons. Buchholz's oeuvre includes paintings, oil studies, watercolors as well as drawings and etchings. (tfa)
