Born in England, Joseph Archibald Browne studied at the GlasgowSchool of Art and in Paris. He emigrated to Canada in 1888, takingclasses with William Cruikshank in Toronto. Browne was a foundingmember of the Canadian Art Club in 1907, along with hiscontemporaries James Wilson Morrice, Horatio Walker, Homer Watson,William Brymner and others. The mandate of the group was to holdexhibitions and promote the cause of Canadian art. He was also amember of the Royal Canadian Academy and the Pen and Pencil Club ofMontreal. From 1923 to 1927 Browne lived in Montreal, and from 1927to 1948 in Lancaster, Ontario. He made sketching trips to theLaurentians, and is best known for his romantic landscapes, such asthis ethereal painting with its striking cloud formations and soft,glowing colour. Browne's work is represented in the collections ofboth the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery ofCanada.
