Description:
Gerald Brockhurst (American, 1890-1978), "Portrait of a Woman", 1943, charcoal on paper, signed twice and dated lower left, 19 in. x 12 1/2 in., framed. Note: Gerald Brockhurst displayed early talent in the visual arts as a child in Birmingham, England, and he studied at both the Birmingham School of Art and Royal Academy, as well as in France and Italy. First working in printmaking in the 1920s, Brockhurst became known primarily as a portrait artist in the 1930s and 1940s. His works in pencil, charcoal, and oil attracted the attention of celebrities such as Wallis Simpson and Marlene Dietrich, both of whom sat for the artist. The woman depicted here displays the same idealized beauty and air of mystery that characterize Brockhurst's work. Her classic 1940s curls, shiny lips, and sharply arched eyebrows are captured perfectly by the artist.
