Footnote:
Born in Surrey, Fortescue-Brickdale was trained at the CrystalPalace School of Art and the Royal Academy schools in London. Shebegan exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1896. In 1897 she won aprize for the Royal Academy dining room design. She illustratedmany books of poetry and prose, and designed posters for thegovernment during World War I, after which her stained glass windowdesigns were in great demand. She was the first woman to be electeda member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and to be anassociate member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour.She taught at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, beforetraveling extensively through Italy and the south of France.

Lot Notes
Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale studied at the Crystal Palace Schoolof Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. Her studio was in 11Holland Park Road, almost opposite Leighton House and she wasinfluenced in her work by the Pre-Raphaelites and the earlyItalians, visiting Italy frequently. She exhibited at the RoyalAcademy from 1896-1935, and in 1902 was elected first female memberof the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and to the Royal WatercolourSociety. Her work also involved book illustrations and after thewar, stained-glass window designs.
