Josef Breitenbach (Munich 1896-1984 New York City) The actor, Alexander Moissi, 1932, vintage print, gelatin silver, verso estate stamp, 29.5 x 23.8 cm, slight silver mirroring to the margin, (EK) Alexander Moissi, born 2 April 1879 in Trieste, died 23 March 1935 in Vienna, Austrian-Jewish actor. Father of the wife of Heinz Berggrün, the German-Jewish art dealer, gallery owner, collector and museum founder. There are only 2 copies of this photograph. Description: Josef Breitenbach (German/American, 1896-1984) Seven Portraits/A Portfolio of Seven Photographs, 1935-71, printed later, published in 1976 by Lunn Gallery/Graphics International Ltd, Washington, DC, in an edition of 25 plus 3 artist's proofs. Numbered "2" in pencil on the portfolio introduction, each print identified, dated, signed, and numbered "...Breitenbach 2/25" in pencil on the verso. Gelatin silver prints, image sizes to 14 x 11 in. (35.5 x 27.8 cm), each housed in a folder inside an off-white clothbound portfolio box. Condition: Good. N.B. Sitters include Josef Albers, Emile Bernard, Berthold Brecht, Max Ernst, Stanley William Hayter, James Joyce, and Aristide Maillol.

Description: Nude bathers, New Jersey. Circa 1950/printed 1970s. Gelatin silver print on strong Agfa paper. 31,5 x 28 cm. Estate stamp on the verso. Breitenbach was a self-taught photographer and began specializing in the medium in the early 1930s. He opened his own studio in Munich in 1932, focusing on press and studio photography. In 1933 Breitenbach was forced to emigrate to Paris where he lived and worked as a photographer until 1941 when he emigrated once again, this time to New York. In New York he opened his third studio, working as a photographer until his death in 1984. – Light crease in lower right corner, otherwise a rich tonal print in near excellent condition.
