Description: RAE SLOAN BREDIN (american 1881-1933)/span NAPLES STREET SCENE Signed 'R.S. Bredin' lower center right; also inscribed with artist and location twice verso, oil on canvas 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6cm) c. 1914. provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, New Jersey. exhibited:/span Phillips Mill, New Hope, Pennsylvania, 1933 (possibly). note:/span Bredin married Alice Price, the sister of Mary Elizabeth Price in 1914 and they honeymooned in France and Italy. Ever the artist, Bredin painted while abroad including, in all likelihood, the present painting. Another painting by Bredin, "Italian Steps," was executed on the trip. When they returned home they settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, near the Price family farm. Condition Report: Excellent Original Condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Lot 162 RAE SLOAN BREDIN (american 1881-1933) "MISS ELFRIDA LANDIS" Signed 'RS Bredin' bottom left, inscribed 'For Elfrida Landis' on label verso, oil on canvas 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5cm) provenance: Private Collection, New Jersey. exhibited: Annual Exhibition, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1993, catalogue no. 450. Estimate $8,000-12,000 This unlined painting is in very good condition. It is executed on a thin, loosely woven fabric that has become slightly weakened with age. The surface is slightly grimy as can bee seen by looking at the paint along the lower edge. There are no paint losses. Examination in Ultraviolet light indicated that there may be a very light synthetic resin varnish on the surface of the painting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports.
