Albert Herbert (1925-2008) studied alongside Bratby at the Royal College of Art in the early 1950s, where he also met Jack Smith, Edward Middleditch and Derrick Greaves. However it was a later encounter with Francis Bacon that was to have the greatest impact over his work, steering him away from the social realism of the
Kitchen Sink
painters, towards an exploration of the emotional and psychological dimensions of figurative painting.
