John Joseph Boyle (1852-1917) 'Indian Capturing an Eagle' inscribed 'JJ Boyle/05' (on the base)--inscribed 'Roman Bronze Works/N.Y.' and 'No 4.' (along the base) bronze with dark brown patina 18¼ in. (46.4 cm.) high on a bronze base 50¼ in. (127.6 cm.) high Acquired by the present owner, circa 1970. Lot Notes John Joseph Boyle, born in New York and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began his career as a stonecarver and subsequently studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. In 1877, he left the United States to continue his study of the arts at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris where he stayed for three years. Upon his return to the United States, Boyle became known for his heroic renderings of Native Americans and was celebrated for his sculpture Stone Age in America, located in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

(31.8 cm.) high Provenance Private collection, New York. Lot Notes It has been noted John Boyle is: "the first sculptor who hasadequately presented the Indian's case in American Art." (P.J.Broder, Bronzes of the American West, New York, 1973, p. 41) Earlyin his career Boyle was commissioned to create a sculptural groupcommemorating the Ottowa Indians. Pursuant to this commission, theartist traveled West to observe the Ottowa Indians and cultivatehis subject matter.
