Reaching her artistic peak in the 1950s, Botke drew inspiration from Japanese screens, becoming famous for her bold decorative works of exotic birds – in which she frequently employed the use of gold leaf. Even in her own time, she was recognised as one of the most celebrated decorative painters of the 20th Century. A stroke in 1967 ended her painting career and Botke died four years later in Santa Paula, aged 88.
