CATALOGUE NOTE
It is likely the title refers to a class of itinerant muscians, inspired by the deities to extoll their exploits (much like a western bard), thereby granting their listeners a temporary release from the cares of the world. Frederick James Boston studied under J. B. Whittaker at Adelphi Collage, Brooklyn, and Carolus Duran in Paris. One of "The Brooklyn Ten" (renamed "The Society of Brooklyn Painters" in 1903), Boston was the first instructor of Art at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences.
