Bosqui was born in Montreal in 1832 and emigrated to California in1850 during the Gold Rush era where he found employment with abanking firm. In 1863 he established the Bosqui Printing &Engraving Co., in San Francisco which produced lithographs andbookbinding.
The Bosqui company published the hand-coloured lithograph “ArcticOil Works. San Francisco. Cal.” measuring 35” x 43”.
The artist is recorded in Harper’’’’s “Early Painters and Engraversin Canada” as an amateur landscape painter and patron of thearts.
Although unsigned, this view may have been executed by EdwardBosqui himself or by another artist whose painting Bosqui producedas a valuable colour lithograph.

The Bosqui company published the hand-coloured lithograph “ArcticOil Works. San Francisco. Cal.” measuring 35” x 43”. San Franciscowas the biggest whaling port during the late 19th Century. Thisview depicts the Arctic Oil Works plant in the Potrero Hillwaterfront area at Illinois and 16th Streets. The complex andCalifornia Street Offices were built and established in 1884. Boatstraveling from the Arctic would transport whale and seal oils tothe oil works refining plant to make soap and other relatedproducts derived from the whale oil.
The artist is recorded in Harper’’’’s “Early Painters and Engraversin Canada” as an amateur landscape painter and patron of the arts.Bosqui was also one of the organizers of the San Francisco ArtAssociation in 1871 and the Bohemian Club in 1872. In 1897, hishome in Marin County burned down, destroying his large collectionof paintings by local artists as well as his own. In 1906, the firmwas destroyed by a great earthquake.
