More Gregoire Johannes Boonzaier SIGNAL BOX AND RAILWAY CROSSING, KENILWORTH, CAPE signed, dated 1970 and inscribed with the title on the reverse oil on canvas Boonzaier’s legacy relates to his unique talent to paint landmark buildings, structures and noteworthy landscapes. His talent in respect of drawing allowed him to readily create expertly balanced paintings, even though the impression of deformation is always present in his work. All the characteristics of Boonzaier’s unique style can be found in the present painting. Boonzaier exemplified a new way to represent the urban landscape, depicting in the painting the structure that has the function to protect commuters who need to cross a busy railway line. The painting echoes compactness with its two typical ‘Boonzaier’ jagged trees in front of the man made structures. There are also two solitary figures in the foreground; one pushing a wheeled cart and the other on a bicycle. They appear dwarfed by the towering historical architecture of the signal box. A light blue sky with some cloud cover compliments the majestic impression protruded by the red roofed signal box. F. S. 1 65 by 85cm
