The Vienna-raised painter Walter Bondy was also successfully activeas an art collector, dealer and critic. He graduated from theAcademy of Fine Art in Vienna (1898/99), from the Academy of FineArts in Berlin under George Masson (1900-02), and from the privateart school of Simon Hollósy in Munich (1902/03). In 1903 he movedto Paris. In Paris he attended the Académie Holosoi and wasco-founder of the German circle of the Matisse-School in the Cafédu Dôme in Montparnasse, which became later well-known as meetingplace for artist and writers. In 1906 Bondy joined the BerlinSeccession. After the union split in 1914, he joined the FreeBerlin Secession. When the war broke out Bondy went back to theGerman capital.
He was not active as a painter anymore but rather as a galleryowner. He, among others, also issued the newspaper "Kunstauktion"between 1928 and 1930, which later became "Weltkunst". Unsettled bythe Nazis, he left Berlin in 1932 and travelled to Switzerland. Finally he moved further onto Sanary-sur-Mer. In the Provencalcommunity he met the painter Camille Bertron, who later became hiswife. Together they opened a photoworkshop and accomodated severalGerman and Austrian immigrants, amongst them several artist andwriters, who stayed in Sanary and the surrounding area between 1933and 1939.
Walter Bondy is above all renowned for his landscapes andstill-lifes. As his early works feature a graphical approach, doeshis later oeuvre illustrate from 1903 onwards a large influence ofthe French Impressionists: it is the oeuvre by the painters Manetand above all Renoir, which inspired him. He dealt with the art ofVan Gogh, Cézanne, and Matisse. The painting presented here is aperfect example of this. In his later work, in which the portraitbecame increasingly important, he strived for new means ofexpression and turned towards a new objectivity.
commento :
A large part of his oeuvre, whichwas created during his first exile in Berlin and then was stored inhis father's factory in Vienna, is considered lost due to theconfiscation by the Nazis in 1938.
