Indian painted ceiling and frieze consisting of: A circularcentral panel showing the Sun God Surya.

Eight surroundingpanels showing eight planets: Chandra (Moon), Bhauma (Mars), Budha(Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Rahu (Uranus), Sukra (Venus), Ketu(Neptune) and Sanaischara (Saturn).

Four triangles withbuffaloes, elephants, dogs and monkeys in the style of Indian Muralpainting of the 5th century.

A floral ceiling border infour parts derived from decorative painting in the Ajanta caves anda frieze in four larger and three smaller parts, the four partseach with a god in the centre: Ganesha, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu,the three parts each showing an elephant.

The central panel and six of the planet panels are signed insanskrit.

All oil on canvas.

All together c.
575 x 575 cm, the large circle c.

400 cm.

Allon stretchers, but unframed.

School of Art ofBombay, by students at the School of Art of Bombay.

Theschool opened in 1857 through the help of a donation by businessmanand philanthropist Jamsetji Jeejeebhai (1783-1859).

Todaythe school is the oldest art institution in the city and a branchof University of Mumbai.

Hatulkar, who as the only one is known to have designed andpainted the four triangles.
The painted ceiling andfrieze was especially tailored for The Indian Room at The BritishEmpire Exhibition at Wembley, Middlesex in 1924.

TheIndian Room as a whole was constructed and decorated by thestudents of the School of Art of Bombay.

The room measured18 feet square and 10 feet high, it was constructed of Malabar teakand all departments of the School contributed: painters, potters,silversmiths, carpet-weavers, wood-carvers etc.

The IndianRoom took 9 months to create and the first thing to attract theattention of the visitor must have been the impressive ceiling thatis now being offered for sale.
The British EmpireExhibition of 1924 and 1925 was a colonial exhibition, a type ofinternational exhibition intended to boost trade and bolsterpopular support for the various colonial empires during the NewImperialism period, which started in the 1880ies.
