Triumphal Arch with the Coat-of-Arms of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand.
Engraving, circa 1635. 475x360 mm; 18 3/4x14 1/4 inches. A very good, richly-inked impression of this scarce engraving.
The Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (circa 1610-1641), brother of the Spanish King Philip IV and an important Spanish military commander during the Thurty Years War, triumphantly entered the city of Antwerp in 1635 after a series of victorious battles in what are now Germany and Belgium. Peter Paul Rubens was called upon by the civic leaders of Antwerp to design a series of triumpahl arches, made primarily of wood though painted to resemble stone monuments à la theatre scenery, to line the Cardinal-Infante's processional to the city center.
