The present work is a study for the larger watercolor, The Summit (Private collection). According to Jeffrey Hayes, The Summit was executed as part of a series of watercolors Oscar Bluemner produced between 1924 and 1926. Although Bluemner originally intended to produce 100 works in the series, after the death of his wife and his subsequent move to Massachusetts, the series ended at a total of 59. The Summit was number 17 of this series and, according to the artist's diary, it was executed on October 5, 1924.
