Your bid: The outskirts of Rome with a view of Ponte Mole. Signed Birmann P MDCX (on the Roman gravestone). Oil on canvas. 92 x 120 cm. On the frame the following information: "Vue de Pont Mole pris de Rome".Provenance: A Danish manor house. The Swiss painter Peter Biermann and his son Samuel were important characters in the artist society in Basel in the 19th century, not only as landscape painters but also as collectors and art dealers. Peter Birmann was a pupil of J.R. Huber the Younger in Basel and of J.J. Kaufmann in Pruntrut. In 1775 he worked in Bern for the publisher A. Wagner. Most important for his career as an artist was his training with J.L. Aberli in Bern, who taught him the art of painting views. From 1781 to 1790 he stayed in Rome. For a short time he worked together with the landscape painter P. Ducros from the canton fo Vaud / Switzerland. Later he worked as headmaster of the studio of G. Volpato. In 1790 he returned to Basel and founded a publishing house, which very successfully sold reproductions of Swiss landscapes. In this auction we are happy to present paintings from both Basel and Rome, painted by Peter Birmann.
