THE ILL-FATED OCEANA AT TILBURY
Signed, inscribed with title and dated 1912, watercolour and bodycolour with pencil
27.5 x 43cm.
* On March 12th 1912, Pisagua hit the Oceana amidships off Beachy Head. The 40' (12m) gash sank the vessel. Nine died when a lifeboat capsized but 241 were saved. The Oceana's owner, P&O, sought compensation from Pisagua's insurers but none was due as the "steam gives way to sail" convention had been ignored.
