The present work is a costume design for the opera Ruslan and Ludmila by M. I. Glinka, executed for the revival staged by the Opéra Russe de Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris in 1930. The opera was produced by Nicolas Evreinov with choreography by Bronislava Nijinska and costumes and sets by Bilinsky. The opera, Glinka's second and last, was the first to be founded on one of the works of Pushkin.
This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being prepared by René Clémenti-Bilinsky, grandson of the artist.

Boris Konstantinovitch Bilinsky (1900-1948) was a Russian-born
artist and designer of film and theatre costumes, sets, and
posters. Bilinsky is probably best-known for his commission to
produce the poster and publicity material for the release of Fritz
Lang's 'Metropolis'.
