Albert Bierstadt visited California for the first time in 1863, where he spent a month in Yosemite Valley before returning to his New York studio. He returned to San Francisco in 1871 and spent the majority of the next two years traveling around the state doing plein-air studies. Alfred Harrison writes of A Golden Summer Day Near Oakland, which was painted during this period, "Bierstadt studies infrequently include figures, but we can identify those in this special painting. The man on the rug looking up with a rapturous expression at the seated woman is the artist himself, and the woman, his wife Rosalie, who had joined Bierstadt in California during the summer of 1873. Rosalie's constant travel companion, her sister Esther, is the other woman nonchalantly reading in the shade of the oak tree...In addition to the human interest, this work is a poignant evocation of typical California scenery at the beginning of the dry season."
