Aenne Biermann was a self-taught photographer who worked relatively apart from the European avant-garde although there is a strong modernist feel to her work. Today several of her images have become icons of the new photography of that time. Her photographs were also included in the Film und Foto exhibition in 1929 in Stuttgart. Much of her work was confiscated by the National Socialists and a large number of her prints and negatives are still missing. - Some retouched spots mostly in hair and face area, corners minimally bumped, otherwise in very good condition.

provenance the photographer. thence by descent. literature and references ute elskildsen 1987, reproduced pp. 13 & 137. catalogue note each of the prints by biermann offered here are annotated in pencil with what appears to be a device or abbreviation followed by 'c' and then a number. it has been suggested by the family that this annotation relates to a exhibition number. aenne biermann sports a cropped haircut in all her self-portraits, reflecting an important shift in the range of feminine archetypes in german society after the first world war. this portrait, combining shorn hair, crisp lines and a cropped composition with an averted gaze and thoughtful expression, is suggestive of a femininity which embraces both emancipation and the traditional feminine virtues.
