PROPERTY FROM THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, SOLD TO BENEFIT THE ACQUISITIONS FUND Eugene Berman 1899 - 1972 DORMENAS, STATUE ET CAMPANILE Signed E. Berman and dated 1932 (lower right); signed again, dated Paris 1932 and titled (on the reverse) Oil on canvas 36 1/4 by 28 3/4 in.; 92.1 by 73 cm Painted in 1932. Oil on canvas, not lined. Surface in generally good condition condition, heavy varnish and surface dirt throughout. Pigment separation throughout, as well as minor area of paint loss visible in mid-left quadrant. Under UV light; green varnish floresces throughout. Areas of pigment separation show signs of in painting. Additional inpainting visible in lower right quadrant.

BERMAN Eugène Pittore e scenografo russo (San Pietroburgo 1899 - Roma 1972).
Allievo a San Pietroburgo di P.
Naumov, a partire dal 1918 perfezionò la sua formazione artistica presso l'Acadèmie Ranson di Parigi, dove fu inoltre allievo di M.
Denis e di E.
Vouillard.
Pittore surrealista, fu influenzato infatti dalla pittura di G.
De Chirico e P.
Picasso, in particolare dai suoi periodi blu e rosa.
Tra le opere principali si ricordano Nike (1943, Washington, Hirshhorn Museum) e I vivi e i morti (1949, San Francisco, Fine Arts Museum).
Il tono malinconico e surreale che caratterizza i suoi dipinti si ritrova anche nelle scenografie teatrali realizzate per il Balletto russo di Montecarlo e per la Metropolitan Opera di New York.
