CONDITION:
Some broad craquleur. Two small ares fluorece on the upper edge, but do not appear to be inpaint. Original canvas.

Beneker was an idealist whose mission was to create art that would inspire and honour the American working man. His subjects were the working men on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of early twentieth century America, and their families.

Description:
GERRIT ALBERTUS BENEKER (American, 1882-1934) DOUBLE WORK: HIGGINS WHARF & VIEW FROM THE HOMESTEAD.
Unsigned, Circa 1925-30. Oil on canvas scene shows Higgins Wharf in Provincetown Harbor with several figures working on a single mast schooner with three colorful dories and one man arranging a net. The wharf is on tall wood posts and has a building on the end. Beyond the scene are several large sailboats in a calm harbor under pink highlighted white clouds in a light blue sky. Second side being an oil on canvas scene shows a view looking over a Cape Cod style house towards Corn Hill, Truro, MA. The scene is shown under a colorful blue to rose sky with ocean in the distance. Housed in a double sided gray painted wood frame with gray liner. This piece can be turned over without rearranging the painting. SIZE: Sight: 24-1/4" x 29-1/4". PROVENANCE: Consigned by a family member. A letter to accompany the painting from this family member. CONDITION: Very minor touch up to side two, otherwise very good. 9-20443 (10,000-15,000)

N.B. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gerrit Beneker first traveledto Massachusetts in 1912 to study with Charles Hawthorne inProvincetown. Over the following years, Beneker enjoyed asuccessful career which took him throughout the country; he workedas an illustrator in New York, produced a series of posters for theU.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., and was an artist-in-residence atthe Hydraulic Pressed Steel Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. Beneker,however, was always attracted to the coastline of Massachusetts¹Cape. He returned for summers, and in 1920 purchased a home inTruro. He was also a founding member of the Provincetown ArtAssociation.
