Executed in 1980.
Born in Bahgdad in 1945, Zigi Ben Haim studied art first in Tel
Aviv and then in San Francisco but is best known for his works from
New York in the 1970s. 'During the early seventies, issues such as
the place of the Israeli artist and the relationship between
province and cultural center were in the air. Art journals, which
were imported in increasing numbers, and foreign travel, burgeoning
into national mania, made contact with the New York center seem
vital to Israeli artists. Members of Manhattan's Israeli 'colony'
resided in close proximity to one another, with studios adjacent
(or rented by one another), and many were closely associated with
Bertha Urdang's New York gallery. Their links extended to a kinship
in artistic idiom in the context of the New York minimalism and
conceptualism of Sol LeWitt or Mel Bochner, including their
geometric structures, the simple construction, monochromatic
coloring, a tendency toward serialism or 'grid'.' (Gideon Ofrat,
