JOHN BEER (op. 1895-1915) 'The Last Fence' inscribed 'Folkestone April 14th, 1902, Anxious Wins' watercolour heightened with gouache 10 x 14 1/2 in (25.4 x 36.8cm) Little is known of the artist's early working career, but he is believed to have used a studio above The Fores Gallery, Piccadilly, London. Later he moved to Nottingham.

Description: John Beer (fl.1895-1915) gouache ''Derby Day'' signed 14 x 22in. Condition Report: Essentially in good bright condition, perhaps a very slight discolouration of the ground paper but no fading of the paint, possibly painted as a fan leaf design, framed within its original gilt card mount and moulded gesso frame which has suffered a few minor losses. Provenance - private vendor. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. John Beer (British 1883-1915) Common In the Paddock, Epsom; A Parade of Derby Horses; The Start for the Derby; Common Wins Watercolour and bodycolour Each signed, inscribed and dated 1891 , lower right Each 26.5 x 36.5cm (10 1/2 x 14 1/2in.) (4) Common (1888-1912) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, ridden in all his races by George Barrett (1863-1922). He ran five times and won the English Triple Crown by winning 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger. As a colt he was sent into training at Kingsclere with John Porter (1838-1922) , founder of Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire. Common\’\’s sire Isonomy is regarded as one of the most outstanding British racehorses of the 19th century, winning the Ascot Gold Cup in 1879 and 1880. Unexamined out of the frame,
