Description:
Dynamic and expressive, this work by American artist Romare Bearden features a female jazz singer highlighted by a streak of yellow. Behind her we can see her band, washed out by the energy of the “Blues Queen.” Printed from a monotype, the artist’’’’s marks have a fluid quality, giving the work a multiplicity of musical elements. Executed in the twentieth century, this color lithograph on wove paper is signed and numbered seven from an edition of one hundred and seventy-five. The full sheet is printed with deckled edges and measures 24 x 35 ½ inches. In overall good condition with no stains, toning, tears or repairs. Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988) Widely considered to be one of America’’’’s most inventive and important artists, Romare Bearden grew up in a middle-class African American family in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. With frequent trips to the South to visit relatives during his childhood, these experiences combined with his dynamic Harlem upbringing would become the subject matter of many of his works. Principally working with collage, his work largely focused on African American life and the progression of black rights. Bearden was also an arts writer, activist and spokesman, and a founding member of the Harlem Cultural Council and Black Academy of Arts. His collages appeared on the covers of Fortune and Time magazines and has been featured in numerous posthumous retrospectives. His work can be found in public collections nationwide, including the Whitney and Metropolitan Museums of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
