Vintage 10 5/8" x 11 ¾" matte gelatin silver print on heavy textured paper. An unusual photograph for Johnson, probably for an advertisement—very different from his familiar Ziegfield Follies photographs. The expanse of sky gives this a foreboding aspect. Trivial tear at the very top. Black paper adheres to verso, but Johnson's stamp is visible. [D3]

7 ½" x 9 ½" gelatin-silver print, late 1940's [?], printed later. A lovely image. This was in a frame, with a large imprinted label on the backing, signed by Bristol, with the title and text "Even though governed by British, Muslims are influential." Wouldn't it be unusual for a lone woman to be in a mosque? [4]

RIVER LANDSCAPE BY LEONARD MISONNE. Lovely!!
11 ½" x 15 7/16" oil print, ca. 1930. Some pencil notations onthe verso in Misonne's hand, and pencil notation by his grandsoncertifying the authenticity [this is typical of the vintage Misonneprints that become available in recent years.]
Misonne's photographs are always subtle and never dramatic. Those with lonely figures and other romantic details are morepopular, but these exquisite subtle pure landscapes are the essenceof his artistry, and reward sustained and repeated viewing. Thetones move from darker greens in the lower right towards even moredelicate tones in the back and across the river.

FLOWER STUDY BY ALBERT RENGER-PATZSCH.
Vintage 9 3/8" x 7" gelatin silver print, ca. 1930, withvarious stamps and notations on the verso. One stamp is for theFolkwang-Auriga Verlag, of which Renger was the director ofphotography in this period. A pen inscription ascribes this to thebook by the botanist Walther Haage, "Die Welt der Pflanze,"published by Folkwang in 1930. The latin name of the plant is givenin pencil. One of Haage's specialties was cacti. A slight variantof the photograph, with Renger-Patzsch ink stamp, was offered inthe F. Tajan auction on 11/22/05, Lot 32.
This is a striking, stark frontal photograph of the plant, withlittle indication of scale or context, a classic example of "NeueSachlichkeit." Just slight sense of handling but no bends ortears.

Toned bromide [?] print, 1943, on original mount, with titleand date in pencil in Oelman's hand, Oelman's stamp, and variousexhibition stamps, plus other notations on verso. The print wasovermatted in 1983. The view area is 16" x 11 7/8".
Oelman was born in Dayton, Ohio, and was an assistant to theWright Brothers. His first photographs were of their flights. Helater had a studio in Cincinnati, and was a frequent participant inphotographic salons and organizations. He was a very active memberof the Photographic Society of America. His pictorialistphotographs were almost exclusively of female nudes. His modelswere often high school girls who were accompanied in his studio bytheir mothers.
