Description:
§ John Egerton Christmas Piper, CH (British, 1903-1992) Interior of an Italian Baroque church signed lower left "John Piper" and dated "25.2.6(?)" lower right ink, pencil, pastel and wash on squared paper 31 x 22cm (12 x 9in) Other Notes: Professor Frances Spalding confirmed that this work would appear to date to the early 1960s. Following his successful exhibition entitled 'Paintings and Watercolours of Venice" held at the Arthur Jeffress Gallery in London in May 1960, Piper decided to base his next 1962 exhibition on Rome, upon Jeffress' suggestion. He went on to spend three weeks in Rome between February and March, 1961. The present study could be related to the works Piper executed during his stay in Rome around this time. We are grateful to Professor Frances Spalding for her assistance with this catalogue entry.
