Provenance
Notes: These spontaneous studies on paper of Roman ruins appear to have been made by Robert as ricordi, painted for the purposes of study, as they do not relate to any known larger finished compositions. As such, they are intimate views into the working process of the artist, his fresh approach to painting and his interest in antiquity.

The present works will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Hubert Robert being prepared by The Wildenstein Institute.
