Description:
ANTOINE LOUIS BARYE (French, 1795-1875) LION AND SERPENT NO. 3 bronze with green/brown patina; on black marble base; height of bronze: 5 inches, length: 7 inches; height with base: 8 inches Provenance: Property of a Providence, Rhode Island Collector Other Notes: Antoine Louis Barye exhibited his original full size cast of Lion and Serpent in the 1832 Salon, which was later installed in the Gardens of the Tuileries. In 1833, he created smaller versions including one with the lion paw resting on the serpent and the other depicting the lion with his paw raised, poised to crush the serpent. Due to the lion and serpent's popularity, Barye cast this for many years into the mid to late 19th century; however, between 1848 and 1857, he was forced to sell all his plaster molds, casts and the rights to reproduce his work to several foundries to pay off his debts. By 1857, he was able to pay off his debts and regain control over the casts and the reproductions rights. Lion and Serpent No. 3 was cast again in 1860. Estimate $800-1,200 Condition: bronze is very good. No signs of damage or restoration
