Christopher Barker writes: 'When he [Durrell] opened the doorhis bulbous and lined features cried out to be recorded,
and so,

as I set the studio flash and view camera upin his sitting room we nattered on about the weather,

mequite unaware at that time of his significance in my mother's life(and one surprisingly she had never appraised me of). His featuresI noticed crumpled and creased benignly when he smiled and ofcourse he duly obliged for my camera.'

This exceptional portrait of Seamus Heaney was taken for and usedin Christopher Barker's Portraits of Poets
,
1986. It was taken at Bracknell College where Seamus Heaney wasdoing a reading. Christopher Barker writes: 'Seamus was veryaffable and strolled out in the grounds with me to pick a spotillustrating the "wood-kerne...taking protective colouring frombowl and bark" as from the poem I had chosen [to accompany theportrait]. To get as much detail as possible I set up a huge studioflash gun driven by a generator and the shoot went well. When Ilater showed him the pictures he said he had regretted very muchdoing the shoot in 'too shiny shoes,

so entirelyinappropriate for a wood-kerne'.

Footnote:
This fine photograph is widely considered to be one of the bestportraits of Philip Larkin. It was taken for and reproduced in Christopher Barker's Portraits of Poets
,

1986. Christopher Barkerwrites: 'His first reaction to my approach letter was one ofdeclining the invitation. He was reputed to be a very shy man and Inoticed there weren't many extant photos of him around anywherewhich made me more determined to get one. He made the mistake ofsaying he would do the shoot but only if I paid him sixty pounds anhour for modelling...As he put this mercenary proviso to me in hisletter he added,

as if in compensation,

it wasbecause he felt the labourer was worthy of his hire'!...I hadchosen 'A Study of Reading Habits' as the complementary poem,
since as a librarian his last words of the poem 'Get stewed /Books are a load of crap' should have been easy to find as abackdrop...After a leisurely lunch (on him) and four pints of beer(I declined the ale,

complaining I would lose track ofmy
f
stops) he said we should repair to the antiquebooks section of the library to get the shot I wanted. He wasdressed in a white suit that day...As he sat on the table in frontof the ancient and crumbling tomes,

and with a largewindow ahead of him flooding him with soft light,

hesuddenly gave me a look of withering irony,

so entirelyperfect for the poem...'
