Description:
Cristiano Banti
(Pisa 1824–1904 Florence)

A Short Rest, signed, dated Cno Banti, 1861, oil on panel, 18 x 28.2 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:

Aquired from the artist by the great-grandfather of the current owner;

European private collection.

Cristiano Banti belonged to the Macchiaioli movement. The artists met regularly at the Cafe Michelangelo in Florence to discuss art and politics. Banti was a well-educated painter from a wealthy family who allowed him to collect the works of his artist friends. He painted dal vero from the 1860s onward.

Banti\’\’\’\’s connection to the land was matched by his love of its people. At the beginning of the 1860s, when the present lot was painted, Banti turned his attention to the landscape and light; he was particularly fascinated by the unique atmospheric qualities of the region around Florence. He took rural life as his subject matter, as in the present work which focuses on a young boy resting in a field with his mother. The realism of this picture ties in closely with a similar work Banti painted around 1865, Due contadine toscane, in which two figures are shown resting in the field at sunset after a long day\’\’\’\’s work was exhibited in Rome in 2000 (\”I Macchiaioli. Origine ed affermazione della Macchia\”, Museo del Corso, p.125, no.88).
