This work by Max Band depicts the portrait of a man in profile. With only a few, expressive lines, the artist was able to give form to the figure. Black and gray shades enliven the presentation. Band's oeuvre includes numerous portraits. Not interested in a lifelike reproduction of his sitters, the artist's aim was to capture and express the state of mind of each individual. This powerful work is just another example of The drawing is signed 'Max Band' lower right. The sheet is laid down on paper and permanently mounted under a mat. It is toned in places and slightly wavy. Above the signature there is a tiny hole (Ø 3mm). The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 67 x 56.5 cm, the image size is 36.8 x 27.2 cm. Max Band (1900-1974) Max Band was born in Lithuania in 1900. He was drawing and painting from a young age, copying the works of great masters from magazines and books. Moving to Berlin, he became a student of Willy Jaeckel. In 1926 he went to Paris where the works by Cézanne and Picasso had a significant influence on his work. A year later he had his first solo exhibition in his home country. In addition to still lifes and landscapes Band created numerous portraits. After the start of the Second World War he emigrated to America, where he permanently settled in 1954. Works by the artist are held in the Jewish Museum Berlin and numerous other public collections.
