His early youthhe spent in Durwan, British South Africa, and completed hiseducation in Bavaria. He began his art studies in 1920 at theAcademy of Antwerp. The following year, he travelled to Italy tocontinue his studies. Finally, he attended Karl Caspar's class atthe Munich Academy from 1922 to 1927. While he was there hereceived several awards, including the Alexander von HumboldtAward. He is member of the "Neue Sezession" and since 1946co-founder of the "Neue Gruppe". Again and again Balwé undertook"painting trips" to Holland, England, France, Spain, and Italy.However, he found his home in Fries on Lake Chiemsee, where he hadhis residency since 1927. commento : Characteristic of Balwé's paintingsare strong, pasty colours and vigorous brush strokes. He loves"strong colours and the contrast between light and dark. Whateverhe sees, he powerfully captures, and his joy, his ability toexperience the visual world has a span that knows no hesitation ina few moments. The Attic Islands, Provence, Dutch canals, and theChiemsee landscapes, all move him in the same way - however hegives each image a specific character.
