Pieter Balten (circa 1525-before 1598) A vegetable market on a quay in a town oil on panel 31.6 x 46.3 cm Lot Notes Little is known about the Antwerp born painter, who is said tohave worked in Pieter Brueghel II's studio. Only a few signed workshave come down to us, among which a kermesse is in the MuséesRoyaux des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp (Catalogus Schilderkunst OudeMeesters, 1988, p.30, no811, with ill.). The present picture is tobe compared with the Kermesses, traditionally accepted as byBalten, in a private collection, Rome (G. Marlier, Pierre BrueghelLe Jeune, 1969, p.452, fig. 294) and in a private collection, Paris(G. Marlier, op. cit, p.453, fig. 295). Similar is the rendering ofthe faces of the figures and their placing in the foreground, witha city view beyond.
