Thefamily have been prominent in diplomacy, military affairsand politics. They are great benefactors and among the most notedpatrons of artists, writers and architects that Britainhas ever seen. The first husband of Mrs Knatchbull Hugesson (RopleyHouse) was Lord James Charles Crichton-Stuart, son of SirJohn Crichton-Stuart, 5th Marquess of Bute and Lady EileenBeatrice Forbes. In 1947 ownership of Dumfries House passed to SirJohn Crichton-Stuart,5th Marquess of the County of Bute and uponhis death in 1956, the Dowager Marchioness of Butereturned to live at Dumfries House

Bale, Stewart Swimming competition; Fountain, Liverpool Swimming competition, Liverpool; Children playing at fountain, Liverpool. 1930s. vintage warm-toned ferrotyped gelatin silver prints. Each circa 23,5 x 29 cm. Both with photographer's blindstamp in lower right corner; photographer's stamp on the verso. Stewart Bale Ltd. was a family run photographic firm specialising in commercial and industrial photography, based in Liverpool from circa 1911 to circa 1980, with an additional London studio, 1949 to 1970. The photographs are of a high quality and the firm was regarded as one of the best amongst its contemporaries. The business had a broad spectrum of subjects but was particularly strong in architecture, shipping (launches and fit-outs), shops, industry and transport. Their stock provides an excellent social history record, primarily of Liverpool and the North West but also nationally due to Bale's extensive client base, making it a collection of national relevance and importance. The Stewart Bale Collection consisting of many negatives and prints is in the Maritime Archives and Library of the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool. - Corners with minimal creases, minimal oxidation mirroring in first print, second print with crease in lower left corner, otherwise in very good condition.
