charles edwin baldock painted horses and pastoral scenes while living in worksop, until he moved to nottingham with his grandfather, the sporting artist james walsham baldock, in 1884.
this horse was a registered pure-bred suffolk, was foaled in 1897, bred by the rt. hon., the earl of bradford and owned by the rt. hon., the earl of stradbroke, who had a well-known stud of suffolks. his registration number was 2963 and his record appears in volume 13 of the suffolk horse society stud book, published in 1902. his sire was the earl of bradford's 'western victor' (registration number 2901) and dam 'sweet annie' (registration number 2884) by 'cook's bar none' (registration number 1803).
