Description:
Lazzaro Baldi

The attribution of this sheet is based on a stylistic comparison with other sheets by Baldi: A flagellation of St. Lazarus in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (formerly attributed to Pietro da Cortona) and two studies by Baldi in the Uffizi (Inv. Nr. 3142 S) and in the Villa Farnesina (Inv. Nr. FC 124595); of which the latter’’’’s left part of the upright composition with Emperor Theophilus on the throne seems relevant for our drawing.

The influence of Pietro da Cortona is very much in evidence in thepresent drawing. The gifted pupil surely knew the master'streatment of this subject in one of the lunettes of the
Salonedi Venere
in the Palazzo Pitti. Unlike most of the artist'sextant drawings, the present example is a well-developed,compositional study. Another highly finished drawing by Baldientitled
St. John in the Cauldron of Burning Oil
is atChatsworth. A comparable study is in the Gabinetto Nazionale inRome, as well (see Isola, Rondino, etc.,
