My latest series of work,
The Sister Project,
is a personal photographic document that focuses on myrelationship with my older sister Lecca. The images investigate thedynamics of our mutual history and reflect upon the innatelyephemeral events that define that define us personally and inrelation to one another. The images depict constructed performancesthat reference personal histories to communicate a confrontation oflonging and yearning that provokes the photographic act. Iinterpret each photograph as a self-portrait. Each frame is aphotographic memoir that revisits the past in an attempt toformulate an impression of myself via the camera. The role of mysister in the work is my attempt to readjust and understand myselfthrough observing her as a type of mirror. Through a process ofreaching for the actual experience,
I am photographing toremedy the sting of loss and the ache of forgetting.
This body of color photographs constructs a hyper romanticizednon-linear narrative. It is my perpetual battle against forgetting. The images reflect my attempt to exert agency over my history. Iaestheticize the act of memory through creating images thatfunction as artifacts of a lost time. Both of our characters areextended analogies that reference our departure from adolescenceand a desperate nostalgia for our home in Hawaii that characterizesthe experience of our youth. I am interested in an exploration ofthe psychological interconnectivity that exists betweenpeople,
and through my observation of my sister and myselfI experience the evolution of this reflexiverelationship.
