CATALOGUE NOTE
Scraps of text, words that have slipped, interrupted phrases andabstract portrait are typical of Tim Ayres' paintings. Thefigurative representations are often reduced to light-and-darkcontrasts; the textual fragments are in fact nothing more thanabstract lines on a coloured background. The lines form words, thena sentence and finally something open to interpretation. Ayresbases the phrases on words he picks up on in film, music orconversations he overhears all over the world. In essence, his workseems all about the art of omission. There is a number of constantsin his work – he generally paints on a panel measuring 130 x 150 cmor multiples of them and the words are rendered in the Eurostylefont. Ayres: 'Eurostyle has simple letters separated by quite a lotof space. The letter's basic shape has roughly the same proportionsas my panel format.'
