Gerahmt. 68 x 101,5 cm Gutachten: Dr. Fred Meijer, Den Haag, Oktober 2012 Provenienz: Rheinischer Privatbesitz ''The painting can be considered as an important addition the artist's known oeuvre, which is relatively small. Not only is it signed (at upper left) but the handling is fully characteristic and comparable with that of other signed and securely attributed works by Benedetti. Examples of these can be found in our online database RKDimages, record nos. 12050, 12056, 12061 and 12073. The state of preservation of the painting is good. There appears to be some retouching in the background and it has probably lost some yellow pigment, for instance in the lemons. It may well be that the artist used an arsenic yellow which discolours fairly quickly. While the style of the painting derives from his teacher Jan Davidsz. de Heem's still lifes of this type from the early 1640s, the handling is fully characteristic of Benedetti. Several motifs in the painting can be found in other works by Benedetti, such as the rummer, the lemons and the silver-gilt columbine cup. The ham would appear to derive from the same study as that in RKDimages no. 12061. The way the table cloth has been painted is also a characteristic feature. Benedetti became an independent master painter in 1640, this painting should probably be dated to c. 1645 or slightly earlier.'' (Dr. Fred Meijer) Andries Benedetti war 1636 Schüler von Vincent Cernavael in Antwerpen. 1638 kam er in das Atelier von Jan Davidsz. de Heem, kurz danach, im Jahre 1640 erfolgte die Aufnahme in die Antwerpener Gilde. 1641 wurde er Meister und unterrichtete 1649 Jan-Baptist Lust. Die Bezeichnung Stillleben wurde durch das 1718/21 erschienene Werk ''Groote schaubourgh der nederlandsche konstschilders en schilderessen'' des holländischen Kunstsachverständigen Arnold Houbraken allgemein bekannt. Der französische Terminus ''nature morte'' (tote Natur) wurde im deutschen Sprachraum Mitte 18. Jh. gebräuchlich. Während Stillleben in China schon im 13. Jh. bekannt waren, entstand die Bildgattung des Stillleben in Europa erst im 16. Jh. Während sich nördlich der Alpen, besonders in Antwerpen, bereits im 16. Jahrhundert ein Markt für diese Gattung entwickelt hat, findet sich im Südeuropäischen Raum erst um die Jahrhundertwende Anerkennung. Um 1700 löste sich in Flandern das Früchtestillleben als eine Untergattung des Gedeckten Tisches aus dem Genre der Markt- und Küchenstücke heraus und entwickelte sich zu einer eigenständigen Bildgattung. Später verfeinerten sich die Arrangements durch eine erweiterte Auswahl der Gegenstände und die Steigerung ihrer Erlesenheit. Es entsteht das Prunkstillleben, in dem neben Früchten und erlesenen Speisen auch wertvolle Stoffe, Schalen, Karaffen und andere Kostbarkeiten dargeboten werden. Lit.: F.
