Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
Lot 1: Sir Henry Raeburn (Scottish, 1756 - 1823) Description: 31-1/8" x 25" Portrait of a man, ca. 1800. Oil on canvas, unsigned, in ornate gilt frame, overall 39" x 33". Provenance: Purchased through a private sale from The Ehrich Galleries in New York City in the early 1930's and passed down through the current owner's family. Accompanying the lot is attribution of the painting to the hand of henry Raeburn and possible attribution of the sitter as Sir George Colquho[u]n, written by W. Roberts on May 20, 1931, London. W. Roberts worked frequently with the Ehrich Galleries identifying several Raeburn paintings and sitters, as well as other Masterworks. The attribution appears to have been presented to W. Roberts who, in 1931, was unable to identify any "Sir" George Colquhoun and determined the portrait was of an elderly man. However, current research databases identify a Sir George existed within the Calquhoun family in the mid to late 18th century. View and Bid on
