(19 x 28cm.), sight With two certificates of authenticity on the reverse, one byUmehara Ryuzaburo and the other by Tsushima Seiichi Saleroom Notice The second certificate is by Totori Seiichi Lot Notes One of the first generation of Western-style painters in Japan,Asai learned the basic academic skills from Italain teacher AntonioFontanesi in Tokyo in the 1870s. Sent to France from 1899 to 1902under the auspices of a grant from the Ministry of Education, Asaispent three months in a suburb of Paris, Grez-sur-Loing, paintingoutdoors as his friend and colleague Kuroda Seiki (lot 260) haddone a decade earlier. The plein air landscapes he completed thereand upon his return to Japan are his greatest achievements. Neitherexotic nor academic renditions of nature, they are personalinterpretations of specific places. Asai's students include twooutstanding artists of the interwar period, Yasui Sotaro andUmehara Ryusaburo (lot 267).
