Lot Notes In 1856, at the age of 19, David Adolphe Constant Artz enteredthe Academy in Amsterdam, where he met Jozef Israels (1814-1885) atthe evening-classes. This was the beginning of a long friendship. Ayear before, Jozef Israels left Amsterdam and visited the villageof Zandvoort in 1855 for a period of two months for health reasons, which marks a turning point in the career of the young artist. Ashe turned his back on historical and biblical subjects he came toembrace the honest way of life of the local fishing population as anew subject. His gift for creating compositions which were not onlyhighly imaginative but also posessed a depth in their narrativequality was a great inspiration for Artz. A few years later in1859, Israels invited Artz to join him in Zandvoort. Like Israels,Artz became inspired by the lives of the fisherman and continuedpainting this theme, like many other Hague School painters, for therest of his life. Like many other young artists, Artz decided in 1866 to move toParis where he stayed until 1874. There he met up with his friendsJacob Maris (1837-1899) and Frederik Kaemmerer (1839-1902), withwhom he shared a temporary studio at the Boulevard d'Arcueil 27Mont Rouge. Later on Artz and Maris eventually found a studio atthe rue Marcadet no. 169 in Montmartre. In 1868 Artz moved to abigger studio at the rue de l'Abbaye 3 together with the Frenchpainter Emile Auguste Pinchart (1842-1924). In this period Artzwould meet various times with Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) and hewould visit Jean François Millet (1814-1875) in Barbizon. Thepainter Jules Breton (1827-1906) was an especially greatinspiration for Artz. The most important place to present contemporary art in Paris wasat the Salon, which Artz exhibited at for the first time in 1868with his work De Pianoles (The Piano lesson). In 1872 he startedpainting Vrouwen op het duin, an impressive large painting madeespecially for the Salon. The sketches were made on one of his manyvisits to Scheveningen. Together with Jozef Israels, WillemRoelofs, Willem Maris and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Artz belonged tothe small circle of Dutch artists exhibiting regularly at the ParisSalon. In 1873, on another trip to Holland, Artz decided to returnto The Netherlands. He settled permanently in The Hague in springof 1874 where he was a well-known artist and had the opportunity towork on a daily basis in the fishing villages and on the beaches ofScheveningen and Katwijk. Between 1880-1890 Artz's work was very popular in The Netherlandsand abroad with prices for his work fetching up to 4500 guildersfor a large oil painting. His main interest remained the idyllicrepresentations of men in nature and not the harsh realities of afisherman's life. Apart from the many beach scenes, Artz depictedvarious fisherman interiors, like the present exeptional paintingthat allows us to have a look into the life of a young fishermen'scouple from Scheveningen. Artz continued making paintings for the Paris Salon, like thepresent lot which he made for the Salon of 1884. The strongcontours of Artz's figures and his attention to the classicalHolland interiors are shown. His eye for detail is demonstrated inthe many elements of this picture such as the fireplace, theDelftware, the copper kettle on an open fire, the tiled floor, thebaskets, the simple furniture and the clothing of the couple. Theseare all factors that help to make the present lot one of the mostimportant and impressive works by the artist.
