Arp’’’’ lower left Study of a boy’’’’s portrait on the reverse of the cardboard (according to the former owner, from the hand of Hans Arp, dating from the shared time with Carl Arp in Weimar 1905/06) Dimensions: 49.5 x 35 cm Mounted in glazed Art Nouveau frame: 61 x 46 cm Very good condition Condition: The painting is in very good condition, according to age. The paint surface has somewhat darkened. The inspection under UV light reveals several small strokes of retouching to the sky and a few touch-ups within the depiction. The frame comes with minor signs of use. The dimensions are 49.5 x 35 cm, while the frame measures 61 x 46 cm. Carl Arp (1867-1913) Born in Kiel, Carl Arp was a cousin of the artist and poet Hans Arp and studied under the guidance of Theodor Hagen and Leopold von Kalckreuth at the Weimar Art School, the later Weimar Academy. He then spent several years in Italy. In 1891, he continued his studies under Theodor Hagen in Weimar. From 1912, he worked as a professor in Kiel and Weimar. Arp created especially oil paintings and watercolors, featuring German landscapes with views of his native Schleswig-Holstein and the Fjords in Kiel, as well as motifs from his trips to southern Germany, the Alps and Italy. A. studied since 1886 at the Weimar academy under Th. Hagen a. L. von Kalckreuth, followed by a sojourn of several years in Italy. He returned to the Weimar Kunschule in 1891 but quit without degree in 1894 because one of his paintings was withdrawn from an exhibiton by order of the Weimar duke. Thereafter he worked in Kiel a. Weimar a. travelled extensively. In 1912 he was made professor. He exhibitied in Munich, Berlin a. Düsseldorf. A. was a close friend of Christian Rohlfs.
