Description:
A pastoral village view during summer is being depicted on this small-scale work by Austrian artist Alois Arnegger. Displayed is the Freigut Thaller, near Baden in the winegrowing region of Lower Austria. The chapel of St. John the Baptist and other buildings of the estate are embedded within the rolling hills of the Vienna Basin. Arnegger is famous for his detailed landscapes in oil and this painting, too, is part of his characteristic oeuvre. The work is signed at the lower right ‘A. Arnegger’’’’. Optically in a good condition, the relined painting shows signs of age and wear. The surface bears craquelure and smaller touch-ups, especially in the area of the sky and along a creasing mark near the left edge. The dimensions of the canvas are 27.9 x 34.2 cm Alois Arnegger (1879-1963) Alois Arnegger was born in Vienna. He completed his studies at the Vienna Academy of Art and attended the classes of Robert Russ (1847-1922) and August Eisenmenger (1830-1907). In the 1920s he travelled through Italy. His most favored motifs were Mediterranean coastal landscapes, like those in Naples, Capri and San Remo, among others. The present painting reveals a typical view of the Silvretta valley with the characteristic mountain silhouettes in the background. Arnegger interpreted this motif a number of times, but deliberately chose a different point of view.
